Blood Bikes have been around since the 1960’s; Their role – to provide a rapid response transport service carying urgently needed medical items out of hours
SERV OBN receives no Government funding and relies solely on the generous donations from members of the public, corporate sponsorship and fund raising activities.
We provide this service FREE to the NHS
SERV OBN are founder members of The Nationwide Association of Blood Bikes;
‘NABB’ was set up to assist start-up Blood Bike groups, agree a set of national standards and provide a single voice to liaise with Government Bodies, Department for Transport, National Blood Service, N.I.C.E., MHRA etc
All our staff from Riders & Drivers, Fundraisers & Controllers to the Board of Trustees give their time for free which means 100% of funds raised are used to fund the charity and it’s activties
We have 3 Riders and 1 Driver on call throughout most shifts
A Rider or Driver may cover in excess of 160 miles to carry out a single run –
Not bad on a sunny day…
Not so much a 3am in the pouring rain!
SERV OBN prides itself on being a professionaly run organisation;
We understand we have a responsibilty not only to the hospitals and patients who depend on our service but also to our volunteers
Our training program has been developed around the National Occupational Standards
Our Volunteers are trained and assessed to a high standard in all areas including the Handling of Blood & Blood Products, Route Familiarisation and Rider/Driver Training and Assessment.
In addition our Riders/Drivers are also required to hold an advanced riding/driving qualification
Our policies and procedures ensure the safety and wellbeing of our volunteers and also help us to provide a reliable and potentially life saving service
We continually monitor and review our processes and activities to maintain these standards
The fact our service is Free is the bonus rather than an excuse for a poor quality service
